Assignment 5.1: Evaluating different fonts 

Purpose of the assignment

You will practice using different fonts (also called typefaces); in doing so you will discover their values and the pitfalls of using some of them.

Tasks

  • Download this document with five versions of the same text with five different fonts (the line spacing and font size are kept the same): http://www.communicate.amsterdam/five_different_fonts.pdf
    • Discuss the value and the pitfalls of using these different fonts in different contexts. When do you feel they are appropriate and when not?
    • Don't forget to make the assignment which is included in all five versions of this document!
  • Select ten other different fonts.
    • Consider for example the spectrum between an often used font such as Arial on the one hand and a rare font such as Marker on the other, or Serif fonts such as Rasa versus Sans Serif fonts such as Poppins, and classic looking fonts such as Baskerville versus modern looking fonts such as Forma.
    • Research the design, history and use of these ten fonts by utilizing the vast array of sources on the internet (sse, for instance, https://fonts.google.com, https://www.wfonts.com, and https://visme.co/blog/modern-fonts).
    • Discuss the value and the pitfalls of using these ten fonts in different contexts. When do you feel they are appropriate and when not?
